For the month of November 2013, we'll welcome guest speaker Chris Vick, project manager for the Bureau of Reclamation, Pacific Northwest Region.
Chris will present information on plans to construct a new hydrogenation unit at the Black Canyon Diversion Dam.
Reclamation is proceeding with its design for a new third hydroelectric generating unit at the dam. The proposed unit will expand the capacity of the two existing units to generate enough electricity to power 9,359 homes a year. The power will be integrated into the power grid to serve 10 irrigation districts in southern Idaho and eastern Oregon, as well as the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes.
The additional generating unit will take advantage of water that is currently being bypassed and turn it into pollution-free hydroelectric power. It will also provide operational flexibility when one of the existing units is shut down for maintenance.
The project's key features include:
-
A 12.5 MW hydro-generating unit, including new penstock and intake structure;
-
Replacement and relocation of the current switchyard;
-
Replacement of the current administration building; and
-
Control upgrades for the existing two units.
The $53 million project is slated to begin in spring of 2015 and is being funded by the Bonneville Power Administration.
